No. 29 Navigating Body Image, Food Narratives, and Diet Culture with Lauren Larkin

The holiday season is meant to be a time of connection and celebration, but for many, it also brings heightened stress around food, increased comments on our body from family members, and a slew of toxic social narratives. In this episode of The Evergreen Rx, we’re joined by Lauren Larkin, a licensed mental health counselor with expertise in eating disorder recovery and trauma, to tackle the challenges of diet culture and body negativity that often peak during this time of year.

We explore the outdated and unhelpful narratives about food, dieting, and body image that many of us unconsciously carry, and how these stories can shape our relationship with our bodies. Lauren shares practical tips for handling body-negative conversations at holiday gatherings, how to cultivate a mindset of body acceptance, and strategies to resist the pressure to “earn” or “make up for” indulgences through movement.

Minidose 17 How do I let down my guard and heal in therapy?

You’ve decided you’re ready for therapy—congratulations! But just as you’re about to dive in, boom: the roadblocks appear. In this episode, we extend the conversation from Minidose 15 and tackle the barriers that can make opening up in therapy feel like an uphill battle.

We’re busting some common limiting beliefs (LBs):

  • It’s cliché

  • I’m being overdramatic

  • My problems don’t matter

  • You’ll judge me

  • I don’t know how to be any different

If I had a dollar for every time I heard these, I’d be rich. These beliefs didn’t appear out of nowhere—they’re part of how we’ve learned to cope. But holding onto them can keep us stuck.

Therapy isn’t about being perfect; it’s about working with your defenses, not against them. Defenses are there to protect us, but when they’re too high, they can block us from real growth. What does it mean to trust the process, to let yourself be cared for, to ask questions, and to build new neural pathways? It’s not easy (even for me, and I’ve been in therapy for years), but the other side is worth it.

We’ll explore what it looks like to name your fears, acknowledge the negative side effects of staying guarded, and step into a space for healing—not perfection.

Minidose 16 How do I find joy during hard times?

The holiday season is a time of gratitude and family, but it’s also a season that brings up complex emotions: grief, loneliness, toxic family dynamics, comparison, and the pressure to match a certain energy. In this episode, we explore the real, often-overlooked challenge of navigating the season when it feels less like a celebration and more like survival.

If you're struggling, it’s okay to start small. Small joys, or “glimmers,” can be grounding—whether it’s connecting with nature, savoring music, finding laughter, or escaping through a good book. Using inspiration from personal stories, the “broaden and build” theory, and gentle practices that helped me find light in hard times, we’ll cover how to build a foundation of resilience through small moments of choice. You don’t have to feel happy every moment to build a life filled with joy.

No. 27 From Self-Care to Shared Care: The New Happy Paradigm with Stephanie Harrison

In today’s episode, I’m joined by bestselling author and happiness expert Stephanie Harrison to explore the New Happy paradigm, a revolutionary approach to happiness that breaks down the false barrier between self-interest and collective care. We’re moving beyond the traditional self-care narrative to uncover how true joy can come from uplifting others and cultivating a more connected, purposeful life.

We'll also dive into the individualistic nature of therapy and the “old happy” myth that we need fixing, challenging the idea that happiness is purely a personal endeavor. What if we’re not broken, but simply in need of connection, purpose, and ways to offer our gifts to the world? Stephanie sheds light on how the New Happy shifts the focus from isolated self-improvement to a fulfilling, community-oriented path.

Minidose 15 Should I be in therapy? TLDR: Maybe not

Therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all fix. In this episode, I’m diving into why therapy might not be for everyone and how to figure out if it’s truly the right move for you.

We’ll go over the upsides and the downsides of therapy, and I’ll walk you through a few questions to help you decide if you’re ready. Maybe you’re already in therapy and wondering if it’s time for a break, or questioning if you're being challenged enough in session. This one’s for you too.

If you’re not sure about therapy right now, we’ll talk about other ways to work on yourself that might actually be a better fit—think books, journaling, meditation, and just taking time for curious self-reflection. Therapy is amazing for some, but it’s not the only option.
